Israel’s Destruction of Lebanon: Pushing Back the Prospect of Lasting Peace in the Middle East

Omid-Karim Sadjadpour is an analyst in International Crisis Group, and was a visiting fellow at the American University of Beirut during the 2003-2004 academic year. A few days ago I interviewed him for Roozonline website. Meanwhile, I asked him to answer some questions for my blogs. Here are three questions on the current crisis in the Middle East:

are there any positive prospects for the Middle East peace process anymore?

I think the likelihood of a successful Middle East peace process has now been knocked back years, if not decades. This latest crisis has only deepened the tremendous mutual mistrust and resentment that already existed between the two sides. Few Arabs have the will or desire to make peace with Israel these days. And likewise, few Israelis believe that the Palestinians or the Arabs will ever accept their existence.

Why the Arab leaders couldn’t interfere to establish a ceasefire or play a mediating role? do they agree that Hezbollah can be destryed by Israel?

Aside from Bashar Assad in Syria, Arab leaders have been torn over how to react to this crisis. On one hand, they are extremely pre-occupied with Iran’s growing regional ambitions and are concerned that a strong showing by Hezbollah will only heighten Iran’s status in the region. But although they initially criticized Hezbollah for provoking Israel, the Israeli response has been so destructive and unremitting that Arab leaders have since been forced to issue strong criticisms of Israel in order not to alienate their own populations. Israeli and United States officials say that this war is a part of war on terrorism.

Do you think that this attack can bring peace to Middle East?

I hope I am wrong, but I fear that Israel’s destruction of Lebanon has pushed back the prospect of lasting peace in the Middle East another generation. There is simply no trust between the two sides, and the younger generations in the Arab world and Israel that are watching this war on TV are getting prematurely jaded.

Comments:
This dude spells BS, sort of.

Lasting peace in mideast is possible if Iranian and Syrian regimes are removed from power.

Israel is the only democratic force in the mideast and it has a right to exist in peace

Ps: Lebanon is a multi-cultural country. Before Israel comes into existance, Christian-Arabs, Muslim-Arabs and Arab-Jews have lived in the Middle East all together in peace for thousands of years.

I hope that the next time the authors of this blog are given the opportunity to interview a scholar in the field, they will have enough respect for the scholar and the audience to not ask such leading questions.

So that we can explain to our american friends why Geroge Bush, and his administration have ruined it for everyone! But helped the mullah's!

I think there is incompatibility between the two sides. Palestineans are not as hostile as the Israelies. You heard me right. Israelies (the ones arriving from Europe) brought with them much anger and racism from where they lived. Palestineans lived with Jews (both Arabs)for many many years. If they ever fought together was like Me and my sister when we were kids. When I hit her, I would wait for her to hit me back, so we had a fair fight!

Nobody likes to pick a fight with Israel. They first hit you, and then they say it's their turn. I think they woke up a sleeping nation when they started talking about the "peace process". It's not the Peace itself the Moslim world are against. It's who is talking.

First, Hizbollah is a terrorist organization. Israel is a state recognized by U.N. and the civilized world.

Second, Hizbollah initiated the current crisis in the region. Hizbollah should not exist. First I blame Khomeini for creating the organization, second Syria and Iran for supporting it and its evil goals. (Trust me convincing your child to put on explosives and go on an Israeli bus is EVIL, so is firing rockets on civilians)

Third, Hizbollah is using Lebanese people as human shields by hiding among them and firing rockets and missiles from their villages. Apparently their media is also on top of everything by broadcasting any strike within few minutes and showing Israelis as the immoral ones. IDF warned all civilians and asked them to leave, after 20 days anyone left should be assumed linked to Hizbollah. (Q: How come there were no adult male in the basement in Qana? A: Oh they were firing the rockets! and they take breaks, too. (If you know what I mean; many WOMEN and children.) )

Fourth, Israel is using precision missiles to minimize civilian casualties not just targeting anywhere and anyone by shooting unguided rockets and missiles to Israeli cities filled with civilians.

Fifth, Cease fire is not an option when you deal with a terrorist organization whose goal is to kill you.

Last, U.N.S.C Resolution 1559

It doesn't take a genius to read pro-zionist comments here and see their sickening racism. The Zionist Entity is an apartheid and has to be dealt with like SouthAfrica's, no matter how much opposition from white-supremacist US or EU, one day MiddleEast will be peaceful and without an Apartheid. Even their original claim to Palestine is void, since if you read the Joshua chapter in Bible, you see the sickening massacres jews committed in the name of God, burning women children elderly, even their cattles. So as history has taught us over and over, the idea of a jewish state, armed to teeth, is a very bad idea.

In this war, Hizbullah has acted quite like a disciplined army, killing many soldiers 35 compared to 18 collateral damages in hitting millitary installations. It is the Zionist Entity which is a terrorist entity using cluster bombs as well as phosphorous bombs. So they should be tried for their war crimes like Nazis were. Zionism and Natzism are two sides of the same coin: RACISM.

"This latest crisis has only deepened the tremendous mutual mistrust and resentment that already existed between the two sides."

When anger approaches you, respond in peace.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world" ~Mahatma Gandhi

At least the Israeli government did a good job by building bunkers to protect its citizens; not like Hizbollah that hide behind civilians. Also, don’t start a war and expect the enemy not to respond and every war has casualties.
In addition, Hizbollah would kill every Jew in Israel (or maybe in the world) if they could, they just cannot. If the civilian casualty is low in Israel is because Hizbollah is not that strong not because they have mercy for civilian Jews.
Next time you want to compare casualties add all the victims of suicide bombing who were killed in buses and cafes of Israel. It doesn’t take a genius, you just need a calculator.

RULES
Arab-Israeli political correctness
Author unknown ( Do you know?)

Rule # 1
In the Middle East, it is always the Arabs that attack
first, and it's always Israel who defends itself. This
is called "Retaliation".

Rule # 2
The Arabs, whether Palestinians or Lebanese, are not
allowed to kill Israelis. This is called "Terrorism".

Rule # 3
Israel has the right to kill Arab civilians, this is
called "Self-Defense", or these days "Collateral
Damage".

Rule # 4
When Israel kills too many civilians, the Western
world calls for restraint. This is called the
"Reaction of the International Community".

Rule # 5
Palestinians and Lebanese do not have the right to
capture Israeli military, not even a limited number,
not even 1 or 2. This is called "Kidnapping".

Rule # 6
Israel has the right to capture as many Palestinians
as they want (Palestinians: around 10,000 to date, 300
of which are children, Lebanese: 1000s to date, being
held without trial). There is no limit; there is no
need for proof of guilt or trial. This is called "War
on Terrorism".

Rule # 7
When you say "Hezbollah", always be sure to add
"supported by Syria and Iran". this is called: "Axis
of Evil".

Rule # 8
When you say "Israel", never say "supported by the
USA, the UK and other European countries", for people
(God forbid) might believe this is not an equal
conflict. This is called "Helping our Friends".

Rule # 9
When it comes to Israel, don't mention the words
"occupied territories", "UN resolutions", "Geneva
conventions". This could distress the audience and is
called "Anti-Semitism".

Rule # 10
Israelis speak better English than Arabs. This is why
we let them speak out as much as possible, so that
they can explain rules. 1 through 9. This is called
"Neutral Journalism".

Rule # 11
If you don't agree with these rules or if you favor
the Arab side over the Israeli side, you must be a
very dangerous anti-Semite.
